課程概述

This course is premised on the observation that it is about time we began to see the twenty-first century as a new period (rather than, say, part of a prolonged “contemporary”), and that the thematic and, perhaps more significantly, the formal and epistemological characteristics of the novel produced in the last two decades are crucial clues about such a paradigm shift.

For this semester, our discussion will be focused on these topics:

• How the nonhuman or the impersonal may assume a voice or narrative position in the novel, and how this device undermines the individualistic subjectivity that has long undergirded the novelistic architecture;
• How neoliberalism may have turned into a cultural logic and altered our affective, psychic, and cognitive life;
• How the sweeping power of digital media is creating new sensibilities and how such a change materializes in novelistic writing (and art as well) as an obsession with immediacy or absence of mediation;
• How the “return of realism” (and the waning of postmodernism) that critics have identified may be resonant with the intense attention turned to the “realism” of the objective world in critical theory;
• And how the overabundance of things presented directly in fiction and art today is a response (but may not be an effective solution) to the precarity of representation.

課程目標
The course seeks to explore refreshing methods of reading the novel other than plot and character analysis. The critical and theoretical writings to be read alongside the five novels will help us engage, albeit indirectly, with important debates taking place in the humanities in recent years—in particular, the turn to objects (speculative realism) and matter (new materialism), the privileging of unmediated experience (new media studies), and the call to get rid of critique (the Anthropocene discourse).

Course Materials:
• Assigned novels (The students are responsible for getting hold of these novels prior to class.)
• Course packet compiled by the instructor, available for purchase at a copy shop
課程要求
1. Preparation, attendance, and class participation.

2. Two sessions of “discussion facilitation” (one session for 1st-year M.A. students). Discussion facilitation is not meant to be an oral presentation where you summarize the reading. Rather, you should raise questions about parts of the reading you find noteworthy. Make hard copies of your questions for the class.

3. Two “think-pieces.” Write after-thoughts, each 200 words minimum, on two of the novels we read. They should be responses to questions touched upon in our class discussion.

4. Term paper. Word count (incl. notes but excl. bibliography): 3,000 words minimum for M.A. students; 5,000 words minimum for Ph.D. students. An abstract of 250-400 words is due in Week 15; an individual meeting with the instructor will be scheduled for Week 16.

5. Attendance at talks or reading group meetings organized by the instructor.
